Such a valuable and cool blog, John! I work with 10-13 year old dyslexic students - do you have any favorite gamebooks that come to mind that are relatively accessible for students around that age? It would need to be relatively simple as they'd be new to the genre. Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the kind words. There are a lot of other gamebook reviewers and players out there more qualified to make such a recommendation than I, but if it's dice rolling and/or Fighting Fantasy you are interested in, I might suggest "Vault of the Vampire" for that age range, as it's not TOO difficult and has many things I would have loved at that age.
DeleteA good basic starter fantasy adventure might be "Forest of Doom" from Fighting Fantasy, or even "Flight from the Dark" from Lone Wolf. They didn't get the highest scores from me, but I think they would be good introductions due to them being more simple than some others.
I won't suggest my favourite gamebook so far, "Creature of Havoc", because for a beginner that would be cruel! Good luck!
You may want to try books with a lot of pictures and minimal text. Series such as 2000 AD Diceman, Knight's Club, Be An Interplanetary Spy, Graphic Novel Adventures, and Twisted Journeys come to mind.
DeleteTheere is also a company called Sound Realms which releases gamebooks in audiobook format.
The Nintendo books reviewed here may be good choices as well.
ReplyDeleteThere are also interactive comic books such as Relic of the Dragon, Batman: Arkham Returns, Zombie The adventure is yours, and Iron Magicians the quest for the magic crystals.
A guy named Jason Shoga has also produced interactive comics worth checking out.
Name is Jason Shiga, by the way.
ReplyDeleteA few Choose Your Own Adventure books are also available as audiobooks on Audible. Search for Choose Your Own Adventure Collection: Origin Four.
Ryan North also wrote a choose-your-own graphic novel titled Star Trek: Lower Decks—Warp Your Own Way.
These and other options are good for young people who have difficulty with text.
Another option for dyslexic people who want to experience gamebooks is the Playnook App: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.app.playnook.games&hl=en
ReplyDeleteThank you for the recommendations Guillermo. I was hoping someone else with more knowledge of the condition than me would chime in.
